Causes reversible CNS depression as with all general anaesthetics. Sympathetic system is more depressed than the parasympathetic. Respiration is depressed. Both systolic and diastolic pressures are reduced as are also heart rate and cardiac output. Coronary blood flow is reduced.
Inhalational anaesthesia. In operations where bloodless field is required.
In first 24 hours of administration about 70% of halothane is eliminated unchanged in exhaled gas.
Halothane hepatitis, hepatic necrosis, shivering during recovery.
Induction of anaesthesia may be delayed. It sensitises the heart to the actions of catecholamines. Adrenaline to be used with caution.
