Cloxacillin  -  Isoxazolypenicillin

  

 Action :

Cloxacillin is resistant to degradation by penicillinases. It is particularly useful against penicillinases-producing staphytococci. Highly active against Staph. Aureus, Strep. Pyogenes, Strep. Viridans and Strep. Pneumoniae.

  

 Indication :

Infections caused by gram + ve bacteria including penicillinase producing Staph. Aureus.

  

 Pharmaco-Kinetics :

It is resistant to degradation by acid in stomach. But food interferes with its absorption.

  

 Contraindication :

Hypersensitivity to penicillin.

  

 Adverse-Effects :

Hypersensitivity reactions which may range from skin rash, drug fever, urticaria to severe anaphylactic reaction.

  

 Special Precaution :

Renaland hepatic dysfunction.

  

 Interactions :

Oral contraceptives : Efficacy reduced, may cause breakthrough bleeding or pregnancy.

  

 Dosage :

Adults : 

Orally : 250-500mg 6 hrly given half an hour before food.
I.M. : 250mg every 4-6 hours.
I.V. : Slow I.V. injection or infusion 500 mg every 4-6 hours.

 

 Duration of action :

About 6 hours.
