Has a broad spectum of activity against most Gram-positive, Gram-negative and anaerobic organisms. It is suitable for empirical treatment of infections by unidenatified pathogenes. Active against betalactamase-producing pathhogens also. High billiary concentrations. Active against pseudomonas aerouginosa.
Respiratory, genitourinary infections including gonorrhoea, Septicemia, Meningitis, Endocarditis. Surgical, abdominal, bone & joint infections. Preoperative prophylaxis at increased risk of infections.
The drug is given by parenteral route and is deacetylated in body to active metabolite which acts synergistically with parent drug.
Hypersensitivity to Cephalosporins.
Skin rash, drug fever, anaphylaxis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, thrombocytopenia and leucopenia. Local reaction and pain at injection site.
If diarrhoea occurs during treatment with cefotaxime, drug should be stopped. Pseudomembranous colitis. Renal or hepatic impairment.
Synergy with aminoglycosides.
Adults
: 1-2g i.m. or i.v. every 12 hours. Gonorrhoea : 0.5-1g i.m. single dose.
8-12 hours.
1gm injection, single vial pack.
