Bethanechol  Chloride  -  Urinary  Analgesic

 Action :

It stimulates the para sympathetic nervous system, there by increasing the tone of the detrusor urinary muscle. This produces a strong enough contraction to initiate micturition and empty the urinary bladder.

  

 Indication :

Acute post operative and post partum non obstructive (functional) urinary retention.

  

 Contraindication :

Hypersensetivity to bethanechol chloride. Intestinal or urinary obstruction. Bronchial asthma, bradycardia or hypotension. CAD, epilepsy, parkinsonism, peptic ulcer, vasomotor instability.

  

 Adverse-Effects :

Urinary urgency, Vasomotor response, flushing, bronchial constriction, abdominal cramps, headache.

  

 Special Precaution :

Allergies may occur are more with s/c injections than with oral preparations.

  

 Interactions :

Ganglion blocking compounds may cause severe fall in B.P.

Cholinergic drugs :  additive effect may occur.

Quinidine, procainamide :  may antheonize cholinergic effects of bethanechol.

  

 Dosage :

Adults : 10-25mg  3-4 times daily either 1 hour before or  2 hours after meals (taken preferably on empty stomach).

  

 Duration of action :

1 hour. 

    

 Strength & Packing :

25mg tablet,  
10 tabs.  x  10 strips (100 tabs./ box)
