Bactericidal by inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis. Susceptible organisms include Mycobacterium tuberclosis, Pasteurella pestis, P. tuberculosis, Pasteurella pestis, P. tularensis, Brucella, H. influenzae, H. ducreyi, Donovanosis (granuloma inguinale), Klebsiella pneumonia, E. coli, proteus, Aerobacter, strep. Faecalis, and Strep. Viridans (endocarditis with penicillin).
All forms of tuberculosis. Should be used only in combination with other anti T.B. drugs. Tularaemia, plague, bact. endocarditis, enterococcal endocarditis. Used concomitantly with Penicillin G for synergistic effect in the treatment of enterococcal endocarditis when other appropriate antiinfectives are ineffective or contraindicated. Brucellosis.
After oral administration it is not absorbed. After I.M. injection the absorption is rapid. It is excreted unchanged in urine. Half life is prolonged in patients of renal failure.
Diseases of ear, hypersensitivity.
Pain at injection site, ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, skin rash, fever, exfoliqative dermatitis and eosinophilla. Anaphylaxis is rarely seen. Optic nerve dysfunction.
Avoide concurrent use of other ototoxic and nephrotoxic drugs. Kidney dysfunction, premature infants.
Adults : 0.75-1g daily by i. m. route.
12 - 24 hours.
