A thionamide derivative active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Action is similar to that of ethionamide with which iti is considered interchangable. Resistance develops quickly if used alone. Better tolerated than ethionamide.
For retreatment of multi drug resistant tuberculosis with other primary drugs.
After oral administration it is rapidly absorbed from the GI tract and is distributed well in various body tissues including CSF, metabolised to the active suilphoxide and other inactive metabolites and less than 1% of the dose appears in the urine as unchanged drug.
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, dysuria, arthralgia, myalgia. Elevation of plasma uric acid may lead to acute episodes of gout.
Monitor liver function and blood uric acid regularly, history of diabetes mellitus. Must be given with other antitubercular drugs.
Oral
hypoglycaemic agents : alters the actions of OHAs and distrurbs blood
glucose levels.
30 - 60 mins.
12-16 hours.
250mg per tablet, 10 tablets per box (strip packing).
