Rapidly depletes asparagines from malignant cells which depend on exogenous sources for survival. Normal cells can synthesize asparagines and are affected less. L-Asparaginase induces remission in some patients with acute lymphocytic leukaemia.
Malignant lyphoma, acute leukaemia.
It is given by parenteral route.
Anaphylactic reaction to L-asparaginase, history of pancreatitis or if pancreatitis is present.
Nausea, vomiting, headache, fever, abdominal pain, hyperglycaemia leading to coma, hypersensitivity, renal damage, coagulation defects, thrombosis, CNS depression or hyperexcitability, acute haemorrhagic pancreatitis.
Hypersensitivity.
Plasma half-life 39 - 49 hours.
