Manufacturers of  Hydrocortisone Sodium Sucinate Injection - a Corticosteroid.

  

 Action :

A natural corticosteroid used for anti- inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects as well as hormone replacement therapy, systemic and topical use. Anti-inflammatory action is independent of the challenge and depends on the reduction in the production of various vasoactive inflammatory mediators. The typical effects of systemic steroids include glucose intolerance, increased catabolism. Redistribution of body fat, lipolysis, sodium and water retention, muscular weakness, osteoporosis, etc. These are not seen at doses for replacement therapy. Long term use will lead to suppression of pituitary-adrenal axis.

  

 Indication :

Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoathritis, gouty arthritis joint sequelae of fractures, administered as intra-articular injection. 

  
Periarthritis of hip, tendinitis, synovitis, tenosoynovitis, epicondylitis, cystic tumour of aponeurosis or tendon, Dupuytren,s contracture, scapulohumeral periathrtis treated by injection.

      

 Contraindication :

Neonates, premature infants, local or systemic infection, herpetic or fungal keratitis, cataract. Not to be given I.M. or  I.V.

  

 Special Precaution :

Underaseptic condition, injection is to be given. Use to be avoided in anterior part of scalp because of risk of microembolization.

  

 Interactions :

Carbamazepine, Primidone

:

Decreases efficacy.

Oral contraceptives

:

Increase concentration of hydrocortisone.

Oestrogens

:

Descreases clearance of hydrocortisone.

Ketoconazole

:

Decreases clearance of hydrocortisone.

Rifampicin

:

Decreases efficacy.

  
Hydrocortisone effects the action of the following

Anticholinesterases

:

Efficacy antagonised in myasthenia gravis.

Oral anticoagulants

:

Altered response.

Cyclosporine

:

Increases efficacy, enhanced toxicity may occur.

Digitalis glycosides

:

May enhance toxicity.

Isoniazid

:

Decreases serum levels.

Salicylates : Decreases serum levels.
Diuretics (K sparing) : May cause hypokalaemia.
Non-depolarising muscle relax-ants : Altered response of either agent may occur.
Somatrem : Growth promoting effect inhibited.
Theophyllines : Altered response of either agent.
Lab. Tests : Increases serum cholesterol levels. Increases urine glucose levels. Decreases Thyroid I131 uptake; Decreases T3 serum levels. Decreases serum potassium.

Upto 12 hours.
