Diclofenac is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase. It also appreas to reduce intracellular concentrations of free arachidonate in leukocytes. Its potency is greater than indomethacin, naproxen, etc.
Rheumatoid arthritis, ostearthritis, low back pain, ankylosing spondylitis, gout. Acute musculoskeletal disorders, periarthritis (Frozen shoulder) tendinitis, tenosynovitis, bursitis, sprains and dislocations. Painful post-operative conditions. Pain following dental surgery. Painful inflammatory conditions in gynaecology.
After oral administration it is rapidly and completely absorbed. It shows substantial first pass effect and is highly protein bound. It is metabolised, excreted in urine and bile.
GI bleeding, active peptic ulcer, NSAID induced allergic asthma.
Nausea, vomiting, epigastric discomfort, skin rash, peptic ulcer, fluid retention, oedema, impairment of hepatic function rarely.
Impairment of hepatic, renal or cardiac function. Children, blood coagulation disorders. Recent proctitis. GI disorders. Preparations of Diclofenac with paracetamol are available.
