Cycloserine Capsules - (D-cycloserine), Anti-tuberculosis antibiotic drug.

  

 Action :

A second line antituberculous drug effective against M.tuberculosis. It is a competitive antagonist of the racemase enzyme involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is also active against other mycobacteria such as M.fortuitum, M.Kansasii and M.malmoense. 

  

 Indication :

For retreatment of multi drug resistant tuberculosis with other primary drugs. It may be used for treatment of Acute U.T.I. caused by susceptible microorganisms. 

  

 Pharmaco-Kinetics :

After oral administration it is rapidly absorbed and is distributed well in various body tissues including CSF. It is excreted largely unchanged by glomerular filtration. 

  

 Contraindication :

Hypersensitivity, epilepsy, psychosis, depression, renal failure. In alcoholics.

  

 Adverse-Effects :

Headache, skin rash, nervousness, dizziness, drowsiness, vertigo, confusion, seizures, tremors and psychotic states. 

  

 Special Precaution :

It may cause Vit. B12 or / and folic acid deficiency which may lead to megaloblastic anaemia. Patients who receive more than 500mg per day should be observed for CNS toxicity. In children safety and dosage has not been established. 

  

 Interactions :

Alcohol : Incompatible. Increases the possibility and risk of epileptic episodes.
Isoniazid : May result in increased cycloserine CNS side effects notably dizziness.
 

  

 Dosage :

Adults : 500mg - 1g daily. 

  

 Onset of action :

30 - 60 mins. 

  

 Duration of action :

12-16 hours.  

  

 Strength & Packing :

250mg per capsule, 12 caps per box (strip packing)
