Produces predominantly interstrand DNA crosslinks causing equivalent lesions and biological effects.
1st & 2nd line therapy in ovarian carcinoma of epithelial origin.
It exhibits linear pharmacokinetics over the dosing range 300 - 500mg / m2. It is not bound to plasma protein but platinum from carboplatin is irreversibly bound to plasma protein.
History of severe allergic reactions to cisplatin or other platinum compounds or mannitol. Severe bone marrow depression. Significant bleeding.
Vomiting, thrombocytopenia, raised alkaline phosphates. Abnormally decreased serum electrolyte values. Pain, asthenia.
Aluminum can react with carboplatin so do not use needles or I.V. sets containing aluminum parts that may come in contact with carboplatin. High doses can result in severe liver function abnormalities.
Terminal half-life 5 days.
